Bug Description

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 the suspend/resume cycle is broken. In previous version everything worked fine. The machine suspends fine but doesn't resume. Nothing is displayed, sysrq doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work, network doesn't work, nothing can be adjusted. CPU fan starts yelling.

pm-suspend.log shows nothing interesting:

Here's a working suspend log from 10.10. There is one difference to the 11.04 log. In 11.04 log the network suspend apparently fails, but in 10.10 doesn't:

10.10 network suspend:

Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend:
Having NetworkManager put all interaces to sleep...method return sender=:1.3 -> dest=:1.5724 reply_serial=2
Done.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend: success.

11.04 network suspend:

Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend:
Having NetworkManager put all interaces to sleep...Failed.
/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager suspend suspend: success.

Who knows if that's the reason for the failed resume??

full log from 10.10:

Additional information. I tried to debug the problem by using /sys/power/pm_trace. I ran it three times and got these results:

1:
tty tty3: hash matches

2:
[ 1.782132] Magic number: 11:492:139
[ 1.782149] block ram4: hash matches
[ 1.782189] acpi device:10: hash matches

and 3:
[ 1.752158] Magic number: 11:148:291
[ 1.752190] tty tty24: hash matches

Just to see if the gfx driver is the problem I replaced the radeon driver with fglrx, but it made no difference.

Same here. I had this problem with Lucid and had to use a mainline kernel for some time. I think the problem was then fixed in Maverick. Now it resurfaced again in Natty. I tried a mainline kernel and a proposed kernel and the problem still there.

PTPP, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

So nothing fixed, huh? Resume been broken over a year, and now with 12.04 not only is the resume broken but of course hibernate is broken too, the only thing that used to work. Great flippin job! Good to see the Importance is still "Undecided" though.

Logs follow.

It says thaw hibernate success but it was nowhere near success, no screen, or at least no X, until it finally restarted a few times and came to the gdm, but doesn't exactly work perfectly.
