Binary package hint: ubuntu-calendar

we need more background pictures with other models and new shots... as of now, this package is dead :(

Or we could at least have a monthly wallpaper that didn't contain pictures of people, there could even be a competition each month for the best user-submitted image and then that could be made the monthly wallpaper :)

gnomelook.org, and other sites to that purpose.
Good stuff (numerous photos of mine included on kdelook!)
Also, find Ubuntu specific images, like this:

The only way for that to work is for the community to make a concerted effort, so if you're interested in contributing to this scheme, please join the art-team mailing list and add your comments to that thread.

Other options, such as those suggested above and also contributing to http://art.ubuntu.com are of course 100% acceptable, but the proposal linked to above involves creating art related packages.

If the Art Team produces content for this package, I see no reason why it couldn't be revived.

There's an "artwork packagers" team in Launchpad where you might find people who can help with the packaging and uploading of the images.

I just found this package and it is so beautiful! I really really would also like to see it revived. Really super much. So, yes! Anything we can do to convince the wonderful people at the Art Team to get it going again would be good. The pictures are gorgeous and they really fit the Ubuntu humanist philosophy in a deep way. It makes me want to cry.

For some reason it just kills me when something ends. For me everything needs to be forever, it keeps me grounded. So I'm going to work on this, not just the art but the code too. Nothing should die, if we can't change tat in reality, how about virtual reality. We created it we can do what ever we want.

If everyone here could make an effort to capture the architectural and cultural essence of each city he/she lives in we could really make a spectacular calender, and as many of you have stated we could have ubuntu users to vote on the best photos.

Regarding Twig's suggestion: I could totally do that! I live in glorious, glorious Portland, Oregon a.k.a. Best Town Ever, so I could take pictures of our Portlandia statue, our town square, and our block of isolated, cubic Awesomium (atomic number 1337). But I guess what I meant is that I'd like to see a return of the naked people. Those pics were super beautiful and I'd like to do anything I can to convince the people who used to do those to do them again, because they were so great, they made my head explode. But, obviously, anything we can do in that spirit is great, too. I'd love to see the naked people return but any kind of monthly calendar, featuring the human figure or not, would be great. I guess I'm saying, "remember the naked people!" even though something like that wouldn't have to be the "main" monthly desktop.

I want to say where I'm coming from: I do life drawing, so the sight of naked people doesn't really shock me anymore. I just saw the old ubuntu-calendar package and the pictures were so beautiful and contained so much positive energy that I want to do absolutely anything I can to get those going again. So, as we discuss a new monthly calendar, which is a great idea, I just want to say, remember me and the naked people lobby. Some people liked those! I know some conservative communities wouldn't like them, but that's merely why they should be tucked away in the package manager and not the default option. Ubuntu is meant to be for all cultures, and we're under no obligation to censor ourselves for the most restrictive community's standards (think about it, should we make sure that women have their hair always covered up in Ubuntu art so as not to offend communities were that is taboo?). When I saw that early Ubuntu art recognized that respect for human beings includes a basic reverence for the human body, I was so happy I wanted to cry. So, I will move heaven and earth and whether any storm of controversy to bring those back again.

What can I say? Art makes me crazy, and I love people.

I'm sorry, Colin... I'm confused. Are you saying that the Canonical devs aren't interested in this package, so the community ought to step up if we want more content for it? I mean, that's fine, I just want to be sure. I guess I'd also like to know the photographers and designers responsible, modeling agencies, etc. so that a) we can find out if they're interested in a revival, and b) if not, solicit their advice for a community-based revival.

I live in Turkey, where Richard Dawkins' personal web site had been blocked by a court order... I'm quite familiar with every aspect of censorship.
I have to say that perception of nudity as "pornography" or even "eroticism" really offends me as a homo sapiens.
In my perspective, the pictures aren't gorgeous but they sure are beautiful, and they really express the Ubuntu humanist philosophy in a deep and sincere way.
Long story short, the package must be revived not just for the sake of Ubuntu philosophy but also for the sake of humanity and enlightenment..
