Do you have the universe repo enabled in your sources list?

If not:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/gnucash-docs/gnucash-docs_2.0.0-1_all.deb

Does the help show after installing the above package?

I think jon has enabled the universe repository since gnucash itself is in universe.
I believe gnucash-docs should not be listed in gnome-app-install (Add/Remove applications), if all doc packages where listed this would make it more difficult to find a package. Only main packages need to be listed. Instead gnucash should Recommend gnucash-docs and Recommended packages should be installed by default by gnome-app-install and other graphical package installation tools like synpatic (see bug #8896).

Thanks for your help, yes manually adding gnucash-docs_2.0.0-1_all.deb separately has meant that help is now available

I also agree that the the changes as described in bug 8896 would have helped a newbie like me,

thanks again for your help

Thanks for taking time to make ubuntu better and for all this relevant information!

Since Gnucash-docs and Gnucash sources are distributed separately by the gnucash team and because it takes over 9 Mb, I don't think that these two package will merge together one day.

I suggest to wait

I suggest to wait for bug #8896 to be fixed before removing gnucash-docs from the list of gnome-app-install.

Oh, sorry for my last comment, you can ignore it ;)

I see so far that the gnucash package "suggest" gnucash-docs but doesn't "recommend" it, it has been fixed in the past but the problem did appear again with 2.2.1 release. According to the debian devel announce list, automatic installation of "recommend" package can be expected very soon, probably for Hardy. This will close the bug #8896.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2007/08/msg00000.html

I will make sure that the Hardy version of Gnucash will recommend gnucash-docs and not suggest it.

Gnucash 2.2.1-1ubuntu5 has been uploaded to Ubuntu Hardy. Once the bug #8896 is closed, gnucash-docs package will automatically install under Hardy.

I would just like to vote for this bug. My wife installed gnucash on Heron and was quite confused when the tutorial wouldn't work (she interpreted it as the package being broken).

I agree. However, gnucash-docs should not depend on gnucash, the actual recommend field is OK. The automatic installation of recommends was planned for Hardy (bug #8896) but is apparently not implemented yet. This bug is actually the one on which everything depends, I already asked in the bug to know if we can expect it for Intrepid. This bug is in the hands of the developers.

bug #8896 is now fixed! However, we missed the Hardy release, so gnucash-docs will automatically install in intrepid and future ubuntu releases (it already does in intrepid alpha).
