i noticed that some incons i put on the left panel of unity simply go away after logout.

could you run "dpkg -l | grep dconf"? it seems like libdconf0 could be not installed for you

That did the trick. libdconf0 was not installed, and after I installed it, everything worked fine with the launcher. Thank you very much.

I have libdconf0 installed but this still happens. Thoughts?

mindvirus, is it specific to any certain software or does it happen
with every application icon?

Every application icon.

Maybe related: every single time I load Empathy for the first time in the session, it asks for my keyring though I told it to automatically unlock on login.

I've opened this back up.

There are still people (including myself) who are still suffering with this bug despite having libdconf0 installed.

closing the bug, the original issue was a depends one which has been solved since and the bug didn't get any recent duplicate, if you still get similar issues in oneiric or precise please open a new bug report, your problem is a different one
