Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-2-generic

when i try to set dma (hdparm -d1 /dev/hda) on my primary hard drive (/dev/hda) i see this output:

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma = 0 (off)

the command hdparm /dev/hda shows that my harddisk supports ultra-dma modes: "UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 udma3 udma4 *udma5"

chipset: "00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller (rev 03)"
kernel: "2.6.20-2-generic"

I have the same problem with 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller (rev 04) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP]). Switch to 2.6.19 doesn't help. I didn't try earlier kernels yet. DMA worked before last update (switch to 2.6.20 + something else)

Is it possible that this is the same issue as #76804?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
