Bug Description

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

initramfs-tools_0.85dubuntu* will not detect my HD as SDA and drops the hard disk down to generic ide with out dma. initramfs-tools_0.69ubuntu26 seems to work properly.

Will attached dmesg to 69ubuntu26 and 85dubuntu5 respectively.

Does the temporary workaround mentioned on Bug #76872 work for you?

The workaround as described in #76872 worked for me on both ICH4 and ICH6 chipset machines.

Now the trick is somehow changing that workaround. It seems there is a rather elaborate "root device hasn't shown up yet" segment that occurs post the call to local-top and the forced loading of ide-generic.

Perhaps the ide-generic modprobe could be moved into there?

Also, another work-around less invasive workaround is to add "ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe" to your kernel command-line at the GRUB screen.
