Status Menu icon wrong

Instead of showing the "speech bubble" icon, the unicode character with a boxed 0 0 0 1 is shown.
(screenshot attached.)

As I type this, a duplicate correct icon has appeared. Both appear to be functioning normally. (Shown in additional two screenshots)

Note that I am also having possibly related issues with nm-applet, which disappears occasionally and networking halts (filed in a separate bug).

Thank you for your bug report, what ubuntu version do you use? seems like it's failing to get your username, does it happen every time you log in?

Ubuntu 10.10.

It doesn't happen every time I log in. In today's session, for
example, the icon is shown, but only a stub of a menu appears when you
click it. Is this normal? (Screenshot "other session" attached)

By the way, I'm affected by bug #439448 as well.
