Bug Description

My Pavilion dm4 is normally pretty quiet and normally cool to the touch almost all the time, in windows 7. In Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2, the fan is running like crazy and is warm/hot to the touch.

My computer also says that I have 4 cpus. When I am pretty sure that it is only a dual core i5.

Disregard the comment about the cpus. I did some research on my computer. I have the i5 intel dual core 430m. It shows up as 4 cores because it has 4 threads. On Windows 7 it shows up in Device manager as 4 cpus also.

The problem with the heat though is still a problem.

I also have the feeling that my medion p6624 is hotter than before on ubuntu 11.04 beta2.
Could it be related to the new kernel 2.6.38.8-generic-pae. Relative high cpu when sys monitor
is only active. Some regression in the kernel ?

I experience a similar problem on my desktop system. AMD X2-64 on ASUS M2PV-M mainboard. 3 gigs ram. Before 11.04, system ran cool and quiet. After upgrade, when I put the cover on the chassis, the cpu fan goes wild and temp soars to 70. For now, I have to run with the cover off the chassis.

Initially I thought the heating problem was caused by this new ubuntu release, however
the problem was related to the fact that I am having two video cards within my laptop
(intel + nvidia optimus). The heat was caused by the nvidia card being active all the time
while not in use. Linux only uses the intel one in hybrid mode.

I've did the steps as described @ following url. Now my heating issues are solved.
Actually the system is cool now all the time, even the air pushed out is cool now.
Happily running the 2.6.38 series.

http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com/2010/06/acpicall-simple-way-to-call-acpi.html

I've added the test_off to my power management boot scripts.

Might be interesting for others having a similar setup.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Using the latest release or the upstream kernel??? Lately I switched back to windows 7 because of this problem, lack of driver support for a multitouch track pad and when I try and boot into ubuntu it does not show the normal login screen... it seems to say that it does not recognize my graphics card... Could it be something to do with the fact that the Pavilion dm4 comes with a switchable graphics?

Willing to help how I can... I would love to get Ubuntu working on my computer again...

I love Ubuntu 11.10 (Used Wibi to install it)... Everything seems to run smoothly except for the following...

Fan: increase and decrease based on heat... but seems to need to run more often...

CPUs seem to be maxed out a lot / or at least one of them is...

I don't know if the lack of support for my gaphics card or for my intel processors is the problem, but my computer has a hard time running multiple operations.... and then heats up more...

Much better than it was before, but my laptop still needs to... support my graphics cards and processors in a way that keep my programs running quickly and not constantly getting warmed up...

If you need any info... let me know...
Thank You everyone for your help so far...

Hello
Well, if installed with wubi, in reality you are running Ubuntu inside Windows
You can try Ubuntu in a live environement using a usb key or a live cd:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
and see how it works without installing on your system.
obviously to have the maximum of the performance you have to install it on the hard disk and outside windows.
Thanks
Fabio

Joseph, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagementASPM a patch was issued to address overheating. Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
