Bug Description

I found some bugs in Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2. This one is about my integrated webcam not being detected.

My netbook is the new MSI wind U270. This one: http://www.laptopshop.nl/product/127746/msi-wind-12-u270-004nl.html

I found a number of links, like this one:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1629538
which mentioned I could find information about my webcam with commands like lsusb, lsmod, dmesg.
If I run gstreamer properties in the terminal, it opens the "Multimedia Systems Selector". I can then test the video input, and get the following message:
Video for Linux 2 (v4l2): Cannot identify device '/dev/video0'
And this is the output from the terminal:
~$ gstreamer-properties
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sunaudiosink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'glimagesink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sdlvideosink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'v4lmjpegsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'qcamsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'v4lsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdmon'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sunaudiosrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Error running pipeline 'Video for Linux 2 (v4l2)': Cannot identify device '/dev/video0'. [v4l2_calls.c(493): gst_v4l2_open (): /GstPipeline:pipeline0/GstV4l2Src:v4l2src1:
system error: No such file or directory]
gstreamer-properties-Message: Error running pipeline 'Video for Linux 2 (v4l2)': Cannot identify device '/dev/video0'. [v4l2_calls.c(493): gst_v4l2_open (): /GstPipeline:pipeline7/GstV4l2Src:v4l2src2:
system error: No such file or directory]
This is the output from lsusb:
~$ lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 046d:c521 Logitech, Inc. Cordless Mouse Receiver
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:0139 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
This is the output from lsmod | grep video:
lsmod | grep video
video 19438 0
After installing cheese, it either gives me a message that it can't find a camera (no '/dev/video0') or it just doesn't open at all, and I have to force quit it.
I posted this is a forum, and was told to file this as a bug report, I hope this is useful.

I had a similar problem with my new MSI X370. I found that pressing "Fn-F6" (has a round webcam pic on the F6 key) and then running lsusb again gives me this.

jeremy@Mirage:~$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 5986:0241 Acer, Inc BisonCam, NB Pro
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:0139 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

You may have tried that already, but I went a week thinking my webcam wouldn't work before I tried that. lsusb before doesn't have the BisonCam line. Hit Fn-F6, and run lsusb again, and poof... there it is. Cheese works great after that (though I don't think it's a stellar webcam).

Hope that helps.

The MSI Wind seems to use the same webcam as my Asus EEEPC: Genesys Logic 05e3:0505

It actually is detected (just type the "lsusb" command in the terminal) but it doesn't work with more recent kernel versions (I tried Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, Fedora 15, Meego 1.2)

Here is the link to the bug report I filed already half a year ago:

Michiel Tieleman, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Natty reached EOL on October 28, 2012.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 763977

Changed in ubuntu:
