Bug Description

I'm running Plank on Fedora 15 alpha.

I'd like an icon in my Plank dock which launches a Nautilus window on my home directory. Today, there doesn't seem to be any way to set that up. When Nautilus is running, a corresponding icon appears in Plank (sometimes - see bug #742295). I can right click that icon and choose Keep in Dock, but then clicking that icon does nothing (it simply runs "nautilus", which is a no-op since Nautilus is already running displaying my desktop).

There are a couple of ways to solve this. Plank could be smart enough so that whenever it launches Nautilus, it includes my home directory on the command line ("nautilus ~"). It would be even cooler if I could drag any folder from Nautilus to Plank to create a launcher for that folder.

Looks like this doesn't work any better in Docky, by the way (at least not on Fedora 15).

Works for me.

Manually create a .dockitem in ~/.config/plank/launchers and point it to:

/usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop

Also, dragging a folder to plank will eventually result in a shortcut to the folder. These show up as stacks. Stacks do have an 'open in file browser' link in their menus though.

Or are you hitting the same Docky bug where it doesnt work if the dock was automatically started on login, but if you quit the dock and start it again THEN it opens Nautilus windows?

Yes, it does look like that same Docky bug: if I quit Plank and start it again it does seem to be able to open Nautilus windows. Unfortunately, that doesn't help much since I do start Plank automatically on login (a testament to how useful this app is!)

So instead I tried your workaround of linking to nautilus-home.desktop. Actually here on Fedora there is no /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop, but I was able to craft one easily by making a copy of nautilus.desktop and editing it. I linked that into ~/.config/plank/launchers and now I have an item that launches my home directory every time, even after starting Plank on login. So that's great: I have a workaround. (It would still be nice to have this work automatically, of course.)

Ok then this is a dupe of bug 511511.

I'm not entirely sure this is connected to this bug, but I noticed that when you keep a Nautilus Launcher in the Dock (in my case a direct Link to the HomeFolder including the special Icon, I hope you know what I mean) and then launch it, it will create a separate Launcher for the Nautilus Instance, since pretty much every other App launches "out of the Launcher" so to speak I wondered, is it intentional? Is it actual DESIRED behavior? Is it a Bug?

From my usual User POV i would actually expect it to launch out of that Launcher that's already present.

Opinions?

You added a folder to the dock, not a launcher for Nautilus. Thus it makes perfect sense (from the programs viewpoint) that it adds a second icon, which is a Nautilus launcher.

Had you added the 'nautilus-home.desktop' launcher to your dock instead of your actual home folder, it would only show 1 icon.
