I can reliably reproduce (running metacity as window manager, compositing not enabled).
Note that this doesn’t happen in unity.

Turn on metacity's composition via GConf and try it after that :)

Same result, this is independent from whether metacity acts as a compositing manager or not.

Well, the only thing that I have with Metacity is that Alt+Tab isn't
working...
