As a data point the redraw issues continue after you log out and are presented with the log in panel. Interaction with the panel via clicking on it causes it to repaint itself.

An additional data point.

When using
hwpack_linaro-omap3_20110414-0 the problem does not show up on beagle Xm.

So the X driver package in the omap3-x11-base hwpack is xserver-xorg-video-omap3. I'm pretty sure this isn't responsible for any issues Angus is seeing on Samsung boards. Tom, can you file a separate bug against the xserver-xorg-video-omap3 package for the beagle-specific issue?

Can also confirm that this is still an issue with the 11.08 RC release, using linaro-n-ubuntu-desktop-tar-20110823-3.tar.gz and hwpack_linaro-lt-origen_20110823-0_armel_supported.tar.gz.

Could be related with the fb driver, as the userspace works fine with different boards, all using fb.

Angus, could someone from the LT look at the issue?
Ricardo believes it's related with the framebuffer support.
Any help is appreciated.

Fathi, the current framebuffer driver used in hwpacks is an internal driver, this would be replaced in 3.1. So I will debug this issue with 3.1. As a note, when we disable 'Unity', we don't see the screen-flicker.

We are waiting for the new framebuffer driver in 3.1 to see if this gets fixed.

Unfortunately 3.1 did not make this months release

Can we at least improve the importance at the LT side? This is a
blocker for Ubuntu, as the default interface is basically useless with
this bug.

My understanding is that we need to switch to 3.1 kernel with a new
driver to make progress. Current hardware pack is still 3.0 kernel
afaics.

The screen-flicker seems to happen only when the desktop is running Unity 2D. Tested with gnome-classic and xfce (with metacity running with and without composite), and it's working fine.

Probably related with some specific effect that's used by Unity, and not fully supported by the framebuffer device.

The fix to a similar problem in Android was replacing calls to FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO (abused to do a page flip) with FBIOPAN_DISPLAY.

Might or might not be the same problem, I haven't looked at Unity 2D's code at all yet.

Please raise this with PM. If unity 2D is not working then there
effectively is no Ubuntu LEB.
