Bug Description

Image Viewer = Eye of Gnome

When looking at an image with image viewer, I then drag a different image onto the launcher where it then hilights the relevant apps to open the image. Then the background goes dark (an effect) and the program centres on the screen. When I drop the image onto the image viewer the image viewer flashes and the screen locks up. I no longer have mouse usage (or at least I cannot see any effect). I can try to logout with keyboard shortcuts and the launcher icon appears for that but I can't use the mouse to access it.

I've just noticed the bug does not appear if I drop the image on the launcher BEFORE the dark/centre affect takes effect.

I have replicated this bug 3 or 4x on Natty, and I have tried it with a text file/Gedit and didn't get the same result, so it seems to relate to the image viewer rather than purely the launcher.

NB: I'm running Natty Beta1 in a VirtualBox.
Graphics: Nvidia 7600 GT - default (open?) driver

What happens if you open a document in gedit, then drag a different document over to the launcher and hold over the gedit icon?

After the launcher darkens, if still holding the icon does the screen darken, ect. and if you do release the file onto the launcher icon also get the freeze.?

What I see is that if an app instance is already open, when using the drag to launcher feature that after about a sec. scale mode is invoked
Releasing the file then will lock the desktop (no .crash created), if you don't drop the file on the launcher icon and move back to desktop things go back to normal

Tested with a few other apps, (vlc, audacious), same thing.
Also opened 2 text files on different workspaces, that clearly shows scale after about 1 sec. of holding file over app in launcher
If one is quick then scale may not happen

summary: - dragging image to image viewer on launcher when image viewer is open
- freezes screen
+ dragging a file onto launcher when app chosen is already open can invoke
+ scale and freeze screen if filed is dropped

Ah good point Doug -- my test with G-Edit was not strictly comparable to the
Image viewer problem.

Having tried the test you have mentioned, yes the image is also visually
locked for G-Edit. The system wasn't locked, just the image. It seems that
launching other programs does load them (you can sometimes see them on the
launcher but the frozen program window (eg G-Edit) is displayed 'on top' so
that other running tasks can not be seen, being locked in the background.

Yes that is a better bug summary Doug, and probably elevates the importance of it somewhat.

I tried it a bunch and using 4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1, it seems to be a safe thing to do now. I'd like others to confirm that though.

I have just tested this on oneiric with gedit and 'eye of gnome' and can report there is no longer a problem.

There is also no scaling of the window now, which possibly had something to do with the bug.
