I am curious do you have that DVD drive in a SATA III port? Because I have had a battle with a very similar issue. Two dvd drives tested and fail in SATA III ports but in a SATA II port they both function perfectly. Had to dig out an old SATA PCI card to get this workaround to fly. If that workaround helps you then the bug is not in dvd+rw-tools its Ubuntu's SATA III support.

No, AFAIK is a normal SATA II port on a ION board.

My previous comment was incorrect. I ment the SATA II (3Gb) ports stoped working. It turns out my issue is caused by faulty sata chipset. As of January 31, 2011 Intel recalled all 6 Series Chipset.

http://blogs.intel.com/technology/2011/01/chipset_design_flaw/
and
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/6/sb/CS-032521.htm?iid=en_US_01_chipset%20gg_headline%22

So for me this was a harware issue and no software is at falt. Sorry for the confusion
