Bug Description

To configure the number of virtual desktop you have to use ccsm general - desktop size in natty. I have installed a laptop from scratch with natty and updated a 10.10 machine. Both lacks ccsm, it must be installed by hand later. If it is required to configure basic desktops settings, i suggest ccsm should be installed with a depend to the desktop.

ccsm needs to be included, because compiz has been known to "break", leaving the user without the "unity" plugin enabled. [1]
Without ccsm, there is no way to enable unity again.

No, ccsm should not be installed by default. There are no options in
Unity through CCSM which are encouraged for end-user experimentation.
Anything there can and will be altered and removed. It's there to help
us explore options and gather testing feedback. So please do not install
ccsm by default.

@mark more days pass by, more i think that unity should not be released.

I think it's a great project but i think also that a software should be released when it's ready.

And i think that unity is not ready: there are many things that aren't solved, there isn't a configuration tool which is considered stable, unity 2d isn't ready....

Software is never ready or finished. There is always a way to improve it.
The same goes for Unity. It might have still some problems but I think the basic functionality can be made stable until the release critical time.

For the virtual desktop problem. I guess there will be a simple tool for changing only the virtual desktop size or it even could be implemented in one of the compiz effects.

My t42 with natty a3 is almost stable now, the x41 with unr 10.10 works well since months. The new desktop concept works pretty nice and is easy to handle, we should not stop this now. But i agree that we need configuration items at launch, just remember the unstoppable drum sound at login. The workspace configuration can be placed somewhere outside ccsm.

There needs to be some sort of a configuration method for Unity by default. Maybe not ccsm, but there needs to be something. I understand that it's frozen *at this point*, but I have a feeling that a lot of users will be wondering "Where the heck are the settings?!?!"

However, that's just my take on this, and maybe I'm looking at the wrong bug?

Take a look at the window placement, at most systems all programs jumps fullscreen directly into your face. This behaviour is only configurable in ccsm. With latest unity patches most programs lacks visibility of their right windowborder. The unity panel left move the forced fullscreen windows to the right out of the screen. Configurable in ccsm..... or we get some other simple configuration tool for that.

Precisely. However, I don't think that they thought a simple config
tool would be worth it this go around.

I'm sure that someone will make something for 11.10, maybe even in a
PPA for 11.04.
