HP tm2 laptop.
Can't boot laptop with VT (virtualisation) enabled in BIOS.
Boots only frm time to time, when try to boot into the safemode - get "DMAR : unsupported device scope", this message scrolls continuously. When I disable VT in the BIOS I am able to boot without any problems.
Worked fine with old 2.6.36 kernels in ubuntu 10.10.
Appeared in the latest 2.6.38 kernels

Also a tm2 laptop user, encountered this problem after installing Debian Squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-5). To boot successfully with VT enabled, edit kernel command line to include:

intel_iommu=on

This is disabled by default because it can crash systems that don't need it.

Hey,
I have exactly this issue in ubuntu 10.10 and even after adding intel_iommu=on , it is getting stuck at black screen with a cursor.
Disabling VT works fine. Please help.

And what is the difference between disabling VT and enabling it?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Hi guys, I have a HP touchsmart tm2 as well. I don't have this problem at all and I have enabled virtualization and works like great with Virtualbox and VMware.

I saw that I you may have a different model. My laptop is HP touchsmart tm2-2105eg and it has a hybrid graphic ATI/Intel video card, including the HDMI from ATI and Intel core i5 470UM. I just updated as well the BIOS version to F.25

Either the problem is caused by the BIOS version (you could try to update it, I just did it last week) or by the CPU driver (that in my case works fine) or maybe by the HDMI you have from Intel.

Hope this info helps!

Anton Anikin, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
