should be able to grab the pager

Bug Description

currently the pager only provides information on length of the page and position, but it cannot be directly used to scroll the page. However I often unwillingly click exactly on the pager instead of the overlay thumb. It would feel more consistent if it were also draggable, even if it is so thin.

This is particularly an issue with maximized windows, because in this case the thumb appears on the left of the pager, while the pager is placed exactly at the border of the screen. As a result, it is actually much easier to aim at the pager (by taking advantage of the edge of the screen) than the overlay thumb (see attached image).

I do not agree with making the pager draggable, but your consideration on catching the thumb by pointing on the edge of the screen is interesting. I remember some special tricks used by firefox to achieve similar results for the back button in the toolbar

The maximized window case is certainly the most evident. One may even call it a regression wrt normal scrollbars (just try maximizing and scrolling in firefox right now ;P )

A second case that comes to mind is when you approach the scrollbar from the right. In this case, in order to catch the thumb one has to:
1) reach and hover the pager (because the mouse pointer was at the right side of it)
2) move back of a couple of pixels to catch the thumb

This could be solved either by making the pager draggable, or by making the thumb appear on the left when approaching the scrollbar from the right side (which I guess would qualify as a separate bug).

I would like it too if the pager was draggable or the thumb was catched when I move the mouse to the edge of a maximized window.
It would spare the time to move back the pointer.

Wouldn't it actually feel quite the same if the pager was draggable or the thumb was catched, in this case?
the only difference would be that in the second case you could also scroll by clicking ... which would be one more possibility to scroll but might feel a little weird on the other hand.

On non maximized windows I don't think this would be useful, since normally at least I am unable to hit the pager.

I agree that the pager should be dragable too. At the moment the user has to be very precise in order to manipulate the scroll bar through clicks - which will cause frustration and a loss of productivity (albeit very small) to new users.

The reason the scrollbar is not draggable is because it is a genuine overlay - there might be underlying content which you want to click too.

Actually, this is a regression between classic and new scrollbars. I think "regression" should be added to the bug report, but I do not know how to do this. I really think this should be solved, it's a little thing that matters.

@mark, in case of maximised windows we should keep Fitt's law in mind, so it would make sense to have the thumb click hit area extended for that specific case.

Yes, +1 to what Christian said. In the *specific* case where the app is maximised, the pixels to the right of the thumb, between the thumb and the edge of the screen, should be an extension of the thumb. So you can use the right edge of the screen to click and drag the thumb even though you are slightly missing the thumb.
