upon logging into xfce nautilus opens and gnome-desktop appears

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xfce

this may be a bug in some package related to xfce or to gnome.

every time i log into xfce, nautilus opens itself automatically. After that, the gnome wallpaper and gnome desktop icons appear instead of the xfce background, and the xfce menus are not accessible by right-clicking anymore. Right-clicking brings up the respective gnome menu. The xfce panel is still there, though.

This behaviour was first noted when nautilus was opened manually through "run program".

This behaviour reappears after logout-login and after reboot.

This behaviour doesn't appear when I log in as root.

Trying, as a workaround, to chmod -x nautilus leads to keeping the xfce startup background (not the actual desktop color) and no menus on any mouse buttons.

I'm quite sure you've quit Xfce with nautilus running, and saved the session.
Try to backup your ~/.cache/sessions folder, remove it and then restart Xfce (without saving the session). This should fix the "bug".

That's very simple: opening nautilus in xfce with gnome installed opens
the gnome root window. This looks very much like a bug although some
people will say it isn't (why the hell would I want the gnome root
window when I'm in xfce?). It can be controlled by adding --no-desktop
to the nautilus command, iirc.

Cheers,

You can quit nautilus by command "nautilus --quit" in terminal (or in the Alt-F2 dialog). If you then save session and log out from Xfce session, nautilus should not be in background. But the problem reappears, if you happen to start nautilus without --no-desktop.

We're talking about mixing components of DEs here, so a prolem arises. One can keep killing Nautilus, and also not let it start with the session, but when anybody runs Gnome apps that rely on Nautilus, Nautilus is going to start, and the problem will keep recurring. I've posted a solution that, if you find it useful, please refer others to it (that is, the link to my blog),

I've tried posting it into the forums (Ubuntu's), but unfortunately I always encounter the 'you don't have permission to post [bla bla bla]' problem therre, despite being a LONG time registered user: there's a REAL bug (this is not) for you. : ( [with teardrop]

Anyways, enjoy. : )
