Bug Description

Open a video (tested with totem and vlc) then move the window, you will see that the video is black, when moving.
Then minimize and deminimize the window, it is black until you move it.
The same thing happens when you put a window over the video (even with portion of it)

now compiz is in main: using the automatic video output everything is black, also before moving it.

The same thing happens even when totem is over a window which is changing (e.g. a refreshing page in firefox)

Does this happen with a specific video format? I tried with a number of different videos, could not reproduce your problem. Additional information?

compiz version: 0.3.3-0ubuntu2~git2006112
compiz-gnome version: 0.3.3-0ubuntu2~git2006112
totem version: 2.17.3-0ubuntu1

compiz enabled using desktop-effects window

using radeon opensource driver with mobility 9700 (accelerated using
EXA, I will try without any options)

I tried with divx mpeg4, 3gp, flv, and also with experience ubuntu.ogg
from example-content package.

Changing video output (by gstreamer-properties command) to "X window
system (No Xv)" removes the problem.

With XAA I get more and more refresh errors when playing the video!

aiglx! not tried with xgl because I want to stay with "radeon" driver.
could you also inform the developers that changing video output (by
gstreamer-properties command) to "X window system (No Xv)" removes the
problem?

I don't know if this helps but this problem is present with beryl 0.1.3!

new compiz 0.3.6 doesn0t seem affected by this bug. I might be wrong because I'm not able to start the window managed now, because it crashes. And the problem might be caused by it.

I confirm that everything is ok now (using beryl).
But I cannot really understand why I cannot use the autodetect mode in gstreamer-properties. If I force the video to no-xv my cpu is completely used when I play a video! instead if I use the autodetect it stays between 20-30% (but the video is black with compiz/beryl, so I did the cpu tests under metacity)

now compiz is in main, under ubuntu-desktop. The situation is quite different now:
with video output set to automatic the video is totally black. Moving it will visualize some frame...

tested again:
xorg 7.2-0ubuntu11
compiz 0.3.6-1ubuntu13

the video starts with a flash and then is black until moved, then another flash and black (or another solid color) again. No way to view it!

Same here.

ATI IGP 340M, Open Source
"ati" driver

compiz 0.3.6-1ubuntu13
xorg 7.2-0ubuntu11

Very annoying..

Video playback works fine in Totem now. And I did nothing to repair it.
So I guess that was fixed by one of the system updates?
Anyway. This problem still remain on all other video players.
Only Totem will show video.
And it will only show the video. Not subtitles

It's not true. I still have the problem with Totem.
You can resolve it with Nicolò workaround
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-i810/+bug/73471/comments/8
(on comments above)

but it's a WORKAROUND not a FIX.

No update has been done yet to fix the problem.

Guess I should just be happy then. Cause Totem started working for me. If it
was not the update, I must have fixed it myself. But sadly I have no idea
how. Anyway. I can see movies and use beryl at once. The quality is good as
well. But only Totem will play the video.

@Misantrof
Please launch gstreamer-properties command from terminal.
Check on Video Tab if "X window system (No Xv)" is selected under "plugin"

Did you try with compiz too?

I did not use the workaround.
Gstreamer is set to automatic and video for linux 4 (v4l) is selected under
the video tab
You see I tried the workaround and found it to be useless since video
quality was very bad.
So I returned settings to default. It just started working one day. I did
not try with kompiz. I do not like kompiz. Prefer Beryl.

Sorry i could not make more sence than this. Tell me if I can help somehow.

By the way.
I am using the open source ATI drivers, not the restricted ones.
The restricted will not work with beryl at all.
I have also set system update to include experimental packets
So maybe that has something to do with it.
Anyway. Good luck
