I think this stems from a known issue with Ubuntu X configuration. Please see Ginn's blog for a fix:

(Basically you have to manually comment out sections of your x config file)

Brian, I just noticed that GOK appears to be attempting to load /dev/js0... which I believe is a joystick (unrelated to the wacom issue). Is it possible your GOK configuration was set to use a joystick?

If you find you need to unconfigure GOK completely, unfortunately you may need to manually delete your ~/.gconf/app/gok directory. Then run gconftool-2 --shutdown, and retry launching GOK.

Brian, sorry my last comment was bogus. The dev/js0 part is consistent with the ubuntu x config wacom issue. The links I provided above should help.

It was the issue with the Wacom entries in the X configuration. Removing them fixed the problem. Thanks.
