After upgrading to linux-image-2.6.38-4-generic in natty, the screen is filled with static.

May be relevant:
I am using an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics card.
The static starts only when plymouth starts and never stops afterwards.

linux-image-2.6.38-4-generic is the 2.6.38-rc5 kernel. This problem probably was fixed post -rc5, I guess as there was a similar problem reported upstream, I cherry-picked the possible fix and uploaded a test kernel.

Please download and test the kernel from http://people.canonical.com/~herton/lp722689/ and report back here if it fixes the problem.
