Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Using the Classic Desktop session (Gnome Panel) in latest natty. I did a clean install from the latest daily image, but rsync'd my old settings files back into ~ .

gnome-settings-daemon won't run. The fallback theme is used throughout the desktop.

Running `gnome-appearance-properties` returns a dialogue:
“Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with DBus, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager.”

The Appearance dialogue then opens and does follow the selected theme. No other windows follow the selected theme.

Running `gnome-settings-daemon` in a terminal returns:
“gnome-settings-daemon: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-3.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory”

(I tried to report this as a gnome-settings-daemon bug using apport, but apport said “This is not a genuine Ubuntu package”.)

thank you for your bug report, are you sure you are not using the gnome3 ppa? what gnome-settings-daemon package version do you have installed?

I confirm this happens on latest Natty builds and I don't have any PPA's enabled.
Please also look at bug 719481 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0/+bug/719481).
It looks similar.

This also affects:
dconf-editor
libcanberra-gtk
Nautilus opening Applications folder

the issue you describe doesn't make sense since gtk3 is not installed by default in natty and gsd is not using it, are you sure you have nothing enabled from the ppa for GNOME3? is the a11y option enabled?

I haven't even attempted to install Gnome3 (I heard it's incompatible with Unity).
How do you want me to swear? :)

Anyhow, looking at the stuff I did install I found dconf-tools and libcanberra-gtk3 packages and they depend on libgtk3.
Can those be causing the problem?

P.S. I installed dconf-tools for dconf-editor to modify Unity's date/time format.

could be, could you try to uninstall libcanberra to see if that makes a difference?

Didn't help.

I also now remembered that the icons on the top panel (NM, sound and Shutdown) were screwed up on the very first login before I installed anything.
Also some icons on the launcher are also affected, e.g. Synaptic. I remember they look differently in Ambiance Theme.

Erlan, can you please run the following:

$ apt-cache policy gnome-settings-daemon

and paste the output to the bug?

Vincente, thank you for your comment but why do you comment on this bug report? You clearly use the GNOME3 version and have a different issue than the submitter one

Rodrigo,

I am afraid, I have since reinstalled Ubuntu several times and the latest image doesn't exhibit this bug.
I believe it's fixed.
