Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

I am running LibreOffice 3.3 on Ubuntu 10.10 with an HP LaserJet 4100 using CUPS 1.4.4, trying to print the first page of a letter to the manual feed but I am running into issues. All pages print to the tray that is specified for the first page.

I have printed to a post script file and verified that that the Tray 1 and 2 are called out at the correct pages. I have checked the PPD file and the calls match the associated identifiers. I have also printed this same file with LibreOffice in Windows XP on the same machine with no issues. This issue appears to be a regression to an earlier bug. See the following links:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=60661
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=80680
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2831

In the previous case the bug was posted to OpenOffice but closed as invalid because the post script output matched CUPS requirements, then it looks like CUPS was patched to fix the issue. I can provide any additional files or information that will be helpful.

Thanks,

Jesse

Hi All,

We are having the same issue with 10.04.2 LTSP and OpenOffice 3.2.0. This issue affects 25 or so of my users.

We have been getting a whack of flack from the users and requested to move back to Windows are starting to come in. Yes over something like this. Haters will use any excuse. I am fighting them off as best I can but once it gets to management I might not fair so well. Users don't care about all the good things we have provided them they only focus on the things what they perceive as being wrong.

Thanks!

Rich

Richard,

Sorry to hear you also have this problem. This issue has reportedly
been fixed in CUPS 1.5 per http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3417. The CUPS
1.5 RC1 is available from www.cups.org, however I did not have much
luck installing it. Perhaps you will have better luck. At the moment I
am just waiting for this to get pushed down stream.

Regards,

Jesse

I have found an interesting work around to this issue. At the root of the problem is a miscommunication between OpenOffice/LibreOffice via PostScript. Therefore if you make OpenOffice/LibreOffice communicate using PDF this issue disappears.

In LibreOffice 3.4.2:
File>Printer Settings>Properties
Select the Device tab
Change Printer Language type to PDF via the drop down menu
Problem Solved!

I don't know a lot about printing but I could see where this may not work on older printers that do not support the PDF format natively. I would guess that when you print a PDF file normally it is converted to PostScript then sent to the printer.

Morgen, did you install LibreOffice 3.4.2 directly from upstream? My Oneiric has only 3.3.2.

To the packages of libreoffice: If you update to 3.4.x, can you make PDF the default for the printer language type, as our printing workflow is PDF-based and it also solves the problem described here.

Morgen in Oneiric we have CUPS 1.5.0 now, so your problem should be already solved from the CUPS side.

@Till, I pulled LO 3.4.2 from their website for use at work, mostly for the dockable find toolbar because I often have multiple files open. My machine at home running LO 3.3.2 will only let you select PostScript Level instead of Printer Language Type. Both machines are running Natty with CUPS 1.4.6 so I cannot confirm that this is fixed for PostScript by CUPS 1.5.0. Unfortunately this has been fixed in CUPS before only to regress later, see http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2831
