Bug Description

Compiz 0.8x runs very smoothly on this graphic hardware in Maverick Meerkat. When I switch to Natty Daily -with Unity enabled- Compiz performance decreases.

Now the Unity performances are better than the past releases.
Scrolling the Launcher is a fast operation (sometimes not, if i'm doing this operation over a browser like Chromium).
Sometimes its hiding animation is smooth (sometimes!!!).
Indicator-applets animation is also a bit faster, but slower than the classic solution.
Workspace switcher? The same situation, no performance improvements between the new version and the past ones.

me too. I have been wanting to report this bug for my netbook. compiz works relatively smooth in maverick. the minimize effect in unity seems jerky, but then expose works fine(as it used to)

Minimize effect runs smoothly sometimes...

Expose effect is ALWAYS slow, ever with less reflections and mipmap!

I have made an observation. if a window is maximized and the minimized button is pressed the animation most of the times is laggy and the launcher does not show up smoothly. this is not the case with an un-maximized window.

Does the window re-decorate on minimize when its prior state is maximized in unity ?

The situation is much better if you use gtk-window-decorator instead of unity-window-decorator so one part of slowness might be due to unity-window-decorator.

How can I try gtk-window-decorator instead of the unity one?

gtk-window-decorator --replace in a terminal or to make it through sessions
change it in 'Window Decorations' plugin in ccsm.

Omer, you're right. There is a poor performance improvement.

I've just tested it on an EeePC 904. The same sluggishness.

I think that Unity is very slow on ALL Intel video cards, instead of AMD/Nvidia solutions.

Yes Omer!
The Launcher is *finally* fast on hiding animation, and scrolling too!
Windows are drawing on the desktop much faster, more than the past releases of Unity.

But:
- The Launcher and the windows frezee sometimes, but it happens less times than the past...
- Indicator applet animation is already sluggish.
- The Workspace switcher animation is a bit faster, but not faster enough (it's the same for the minimize effect on windows too).

There is no hard evidence of this performance issue, and no real track to follow to try to improve things here at this stage.

I will mark the bug as incomplete. Feel free to reopen if you have a more narrow definition of the issue that we could tackle.

Thanks
