Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

When viewing a pdf file with the default document viewer the pages are slow to render and will NOT display pictures at all. While the words display fine, any place in the document that should contain a picture, is just rendered as a blank white space.

I installed Adobe's acrobat Reader and it displays the pages faster and all pictures are displayed correctly as well.

Using
Ubuntu 10.10
Evince version 2.32.0-0ubuntu1.1

Invalid? How can the poppler people possibly justify the decision to call this invalid? Did they even look at the evidence?

So much for the "thank you for helping to make Ubuntu better" message I got at the beginning of this whole thing.
I guess I was wasting my time on this and I should just stick with Adobe. They may not be open source, but at least their stuff works.

Todd, This bug is not present in the upstream code. What upstream told us was that the bug was with a compile option used by Ubuntu specifically, so the upstream bug is invalid, but not the Ubuntu bug.

I have confirmed that this works great if you edit /debian/rules and --enable-openjpeg

This might be a duplicate of bug #450533 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/450533), which dates back to 2009 and is also caused by the lack of openjpeg support in poppler. Could someone confirm this?

Anton, they are dups of each other. I marked that one as a duplicate of this since it is a little more active.

Also I didn't mention this before but the reason this has not been fixed is because poppler is in main, so all of its build-deps must be in main, libopenjpeg is not in main so that needs to get put in main first. I filed a main inclusion request some time ago (bug 711061) so hopefully we can see this fixed in the future.

Since my 2017-11-06 upgrade of evince* from 3.18.2-1ubuntu4.1 to 3.18.2-1ubuntu4.2 ,it's doing the same to me. It prints graphics as blank pages. That said, "Document viewer" is doing the same thing so maybe someone broke an underlying library. Only GIMP manages to print it, it seems.

Try "Print preview" on the attached.

@toddcarnes: You're right, boilerplate "Glad to be of service" messages are lame and suck.
