Bug Description

Double clicking is pointless because having single click as "exit expo" should not affect draging windows into different workspaces. Just like when using single click(instead of double click) in nautilus does not stop you moving a file or folder with the left mouse button.
Also it is strange to have exiting expo as a double click because to enter expo via the unity launcher is single click.
Does having it as double clicking, also mean that you have to double tap when using a touch screen?

At the moment in compizconfig settings manager you can not have "drag and drop" and "exit expo" both bound to "button 1"

So I think that the way this should work is that the "double click to
end" should only apply where you are actually clicking a movable
window, and when clicking anything else it should select that desktop
and be done with it.

That's an intentional limitation in core.

Design opinion on that? Sam's proposal would accomodate both regular and "power" users, but it may still be problematic in that the behavior would not be consistent depending on whether you click on a window rectangle or not.

Is it worthwhile to keep the ability to move windows across workspaces by default? Could this option be kept, but only when pressing ALT for example, similar to an ALT + mouse drag that lets one move windows without having to reach for the window border.

I don't see why you could not click and drag a window to a new workspace without having to press a key(like alt) and also to have single click choosing the workspace. Currently single clicking on a workspace is pointless, it just highlights a workspace, it's just adding an extra mouse click that is not really needed. Nothing special comes from having a workspace highlighted.

but yeah, I think sam's idea is good

This is also an accessibility issue:

There are people that cannot use a keyboard and others that cannot use a pointer. So using the mouse in combination of a modifier is not a good idea: there should be a way to leave expo by using only the pointer and there should be a second way to leave expo by using only the keyboard.

As this bug is about the pointer, I would also prefer having the single button1 click to leave expo and the button1 down+hold to drag items around in expo.

In Maverick Netbook Edition a single click was sufficient for switching workspaces. In Natty this changed to double click, which is very annoying. My MacBook has no separate keys for clicking, you press the whole touchpad down for doing a click. Doubleclicks are very hard to do this way.
This issue is not yet fixed.

And one big wish to all developers: don't change every behaviour in every relase of Ubuntu! If you wish to change a behaviour, make it configurable.

Have you guys considered the way Apple does it with Spaces? Click to drag and release click with nothing dragged to exit out of it?
