Bug Description

Binary package hint: simple-scan

Scanner model: HP ScanJet 3670
Ubuntu-release: 10.04 LTS

Relevant packages and versions:

libsane 1.0.22~git20101229-0ubuntu1~lucid1
libsane-dbg 1.0.22~git20101229-0ubuntu1~lucid1
sane-utils 1.0.22~git20101229-0ubuntu1~lucid1
simple-scan 1.0.3-0ubuntu1
xsane 0.996-2ubuntu3
xsane-common 0.996-2ubuntu3

Note: libsane, libsane-dbg and sane-utils packages were downloaded from Robert Ancell's PPA (https://edge.launchpad.net/~robert-ancell/+archive/sane-backends), after the original packages that shipped with Lucid didn't work out of the box, see Bug #587600.

When I use Simple Scan with "scan as photo" option at higher resolutions, the scanning process is very slow: on 600 dpi, it takes 5-6 minutes; on 1200 dpi it would take about an hour to scan a page (to be honest, I cancelled the process about halfway).

In contrast, if I use xsane with "factory settings" + 1200 dpi, the whole process takes about 2-3 minutes.

I experience the same speed problem, either with xsane or simple-scan, with the same scanner HP Scanjet 3670.
I think it is related to sane-backends, not simple-scan

I did a few tests :

In a Windows XP virtual machine (Virtualbox 4.0.4 with USB2 support), on my computer :
- the initialization takes between 12 and 16 seconds
- the scan at 300 dpi takes 55 seconds
- the scan at 600 dpi takes around 4 minutes
- the scan at 1200 dpi takes around 30 minutes

On the same computer, on Lucid 64bits, with the latest version of sane-backends (sane-backends - 1.0.22-0ubuntu1~lucid2 , taken from the PPA : https://edge.launchpad.net/~robert-ancell/+archive/sane-backends/+packages ) :
- the initialization takes between 16 and 20 seconds. That seems to depend on the dpi settings and/or the fact that a previous scan has been made or not
- the scan at 300 dpi takes 55 seconds
- the scan at 600 dpi takes around 8 minutes
- the scan at 1200 dpi takes around 90 minutes (I stopped it before the end)

That would lead to the following assumptions for the linux driver :
- the initialization time seems very long to me, but it might be "normal" on that scanner
- the scan time is normal at 300 dpi, but should be improvable at 600 dpi (4 minutes vs 8 minutes) and 1200 dpi (30 minutes vs 90 minutes)

summary: - simple-scan is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi
+ HP Scanjet 3670 is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi
