Forgot to mention--this is the 6.10 LiveCD installation, and this happened just after it started moving files after prepping the partitions (customer partition layout; installing over an old installation on a dual-boot system)...

Given the age of this bug and the lack of information on how to reproduce it, and the fact that it looks like it was a hardware problem, I'm going to close it now as not useful. If you still have this problem please reopen it and we'll try to find out more about it.
