[gm45] Choppy / jerky mouse with Intel GMA 4500M

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

My mouse is choppy sometimes. I think it's more often when I don't utilize my graphic card much. Because while it happens I do something that requires more graphic card work (e.g. some movement in cairo-dock) and after a few seconds the movement is smooth again.

May be xorg problem.

Hey Martin,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.

Actually I think it's a "duplicate" of a #662946. I will test Natty in a few days and report back.

Martin Lukeš, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I tested the latest 12.10 as live CD. The apport-collect messages are from it.

Sadly, the problem stays.

I assume to test different kernels I have to install 12.10, I couldn't do it from LiveCD, am I right?
Also I don't understand from where exactly I get those kernels I ought to test. Could you please send me more accurate description? Or exact links? It'll be my first time...

Thank you for testing 12.10.

You are welcome to test different kernels in any installed and supported release.

>"I couldn't do it from LiveCD, am I right?"

Yes, unless you know how to respin LiveCDs? ;)

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Mainline_Kernels_Archive :
"Mainline Kernels Archive
The mainline kernels archive is located at the URL below, there is a directory for each mainline build:

Does this choppy mouse problem occur with both your touchpad and external mouse noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/695680/+attachment/1779597/+files/Lsusb.txt :
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 045e:0083 Microsoft Corp. Basic Optical Mouse

As well, did this issue happen in a release prior to Maverick?

Chris,

yes, I can replicate this issue with touchpad and every mouse.

First release I installed on that laptop was 10.10, now I use 11.04 and tried 12.10 for testing. The problem was present in every named release. Do I have to install that obsolete release?

OK, I wouldn't want to jinx it but I've been using live version of 10.04.4 for four hours now, did several suspend-to-ram and mouse was smooth all the time!
I also did not see any kworker processes running, which are present in newer releases. I noticed them to spike CPU usage and change priority to realtime when mouse is jerky. Now I see I did not write it here soooo.

Thanks to http://souriguha.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/how-to-solve-problem-with-thinkpadkslowd-kworker-on-linux-kernel-2-35-2-36/ I found a solution. Too bad it's after I converted to Arch Linux.

Here are two variants of the solution in short, based on affect:

Immediate (until restart):
sudo su -
echo N> /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll
exit

Permanent (after restart):
sudo su -
echo "options drm_kms_helper poll=N">/etc/modprobe.d/local.conf
exit

Hope this helps others having the same problems on Acer Extensa 5235 and/or Intel GMA 4500M graphic, no matter the kernel version and linux distribution.
