HD Access Light Constantly Lit

Bug Description

Using the -22 or -24 kernel package on an amd64 machine, with or without all Ubuntu updates, the hd access light rarely (if ever) turns off. This happens with either the stock 250GB 5400 RPM SATA drive or my new 64GB Sandforce 1222 SSD. With the stock drive installed, the hd access light doesn't seem to correlate with the sound of the disk actually doing anything; the light is on even when the disk isn't making any noise at all.

No change, even if I install Natty to the SSD and boot from it. Still
on constantly.

Does this mean that it's a bug in the ACPI system of the kernel? Is it
possible for me to put a switch in the /etc/default/grub file to turn
this feature off, or would I have to compile a new kernel? I'm not
crazy about compiling a custom kernel, but if that's what it takes...

What are the odds that this "feature" is damaging my hardware?

This happens with either the stock 250GB 5400 RPM SATA drive or my new 64GB Sandforce 1222 SSD. With the stock drive installed, the hd access light doesn't seem to correlate with the sound of the disk actually doing anything; the light is on even when the disk isn't making any noise at all.

Adding acpi_osi=Linux to the /etc/default/burg file and reinstalling
burg gets rid of the dmesg error, but does nothing for my HD access
light. :(

Hi Jon,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have tested linux-image-2.6.37-020637rc2-generic_2.6.37-020637rc2.201011160905_amd64 (Maverick, dated November 16) and linux-image-2.6.37-999-generic_2.6.37-999.201101131119_amd64 (current, dated today), with the same result (light is still lit). The only change I noticed was that each kernel gave me a different set of warnings than the MMIO reservation warning I'm used to before X starts. I tried using apport-collect with each kernel, but I kept getting errors stating that this isn't an Ubuntu kernel, so apport exited without submitting the data.

Resolved; user error.

I had a MicroSD to SD adapter device in the SD card slot of this machine, but no MicroSD card inside the adapter. Removing the adapter from the SD slot allows the hard disk access light to function normally.
