Bug Description

I'm using Dell Inspiron 1520 and Kubuntu Maverick.
I've installed 4Gb of RAM (instead of 2Gb) and after that kernel crashes appeared.
I've run memtest. I've run BIOS built-in hardware test utility. There are reporting no problem.
I've even updated BIOS to latest revision (A09).

I've tried mainline kernel (2.6.37-092637rc7-generic) -- system cannot even boot, there is kernel panic.
It says something like this:
------------------------------
Kernel panic - not syncing: map_single: bounce buffer is not DMA'ble
Pid: xxx, comm: NetworkManager Tainted: P 2.6.37-02637rc7-generic
Call trace:
    ... panic ...
    ... default_spin_lock_flags ...
    ... swiotlb_tbl_map_single ...
    ... map_single ...
------------------------------
I've googled "bounce buffer is not DMA'ble" and found 'fixed' bugs in old kernels (2007-2008) in swiotlb with some mmaps in first 4Gb of RAM.
I don't if it is related, but my dmesg has line "Memory: 4041352k/4456448k available (5711k kernel code, 264216k absent, 150880k reserved, 5379k data, 908k init)".
BIOS reports 256Mb of RAM is absent so, maybe there is some errors in the way kernel detects and occupies memory?

Hangs in kernel from maverick are random.
Sometimes it just hangs in GUI.
Sometimes it hangs and caps+scroll lock leds are blinking.
I've tried to leave computer in console, and sometimes kernel says "Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference" in a cycle and keyboard does not work (maybe it's the same symptom as hanged GUI?)

I cant really debug this oops/panics because I can't boot with cmdline "console=ttyUSB0,...".

Look at the bug 688383. It has similar as similar kernel boot Call Trace. I have also a DEL Vostro 1700 with 4GB of RAM.
I also reported this bug to: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25402.
It is a regression (possibly from 2.6.36-2 onwards). Mainline kernel 2.6.37-rc8 doesn't work either.
It was already tagged as a regression (see: http://groups.google.com/group/linux.kernel/msg/4fecd51b083f565d).

Try to use Mainline kernel 2.6.36-2 from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36.2-natty/
and (just in case)
 follow the guidelines from: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Installing%20Mainline%20Kernels

Meanwhile, let see if the problem is solved soon.

No. This bug is not a duplicate.
I've tried 2.6.36-02063602-generic. Yes, it does not panic at boot, but it stiil has random hangs.

I've found, that kernel crashes only when I'm using wifi connection.
I was using inspiron 1520 for 3 days without problems over ethernet.

Also I've caught such kernel messages:

Hi afunix,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have BCM4311 (rev 01) wifi controller.
I've made a lot of experiments and can say, that system hangs with wl driver.
When I'm using b43 driver, system is more stable. But there are disconnects from wifi network with message "No probe response from AP 00:13:46:70:b0:e7 after 500ms, disconnecting." from kernel.
