Bug Description
Ubuntu 10.10 desktop version on a MSI wind u100 (Notebook)
When the computer is working on battery power, it can't wake from sleep and hibernate. It freezes and you can't move the cursor. The power manager indicates that the battery is critically low (0.06 = 100%) event though there are several hours left when you click the battery icon.
It can also be a problem when you pull out the power plug - it will give the same message and freeze after a couple of seconds.
Some times when you try waking the computer from sleep it will stop at "Checking battery state" - sometimes earlier.

Dear Fabio,
I'm pretty new to this, so I'm not sure how to attach the files, but now I try. I couldn't get a response for the two .1 files in my browser - What do I need to do?
Thank you for your time.

Hello
Keeping pressed the right shift, start the pc, grub menu will showed, select the 2.6.35 kernel, enter, when the system is started go to system - administrtion - synaptyc, click the search box and type linux, then mark for removal all the entries for the 2.6.37 kernel.
Can you also please download the latest build of natty that ship the most advenced kernel and try a live session without installing:

to see if this bug is fixed, elsewhere report here that we go to look into gpm triaging

Hi Fabio,
I'm afraid it didn't solve the problem. It acts exactly the same:
When I unplug the power cable I get a warning, that my battery will run out in three minutes although when I click the battery icon it says more than three hours.
When I put it to sleep it freezes during the wakeup.
I tried the 11.04 kernel and it almost worked. It woke up from sleep but soon after it got a delay and eventually it froze again.
I really appreciate your help - thank you for that.

Maybe I should say, that sleep works perfectly fine when plugged to AC power. The problem only occurs when working on battery.

Hello Marko and thank you so much for the answers. I see you are on to
something. Now I can restart my computer from sleep and hibernation.
But is it possible to turn the wifi back on in some way? Now it freezes as
soon as I turn it on again.

Hello Kristian
It would be great if you can test a live session of the daily build of Natty (see #17) on a Usb key created with startup disk creator.
Thanks

Hi Fabio,
now I tried the live session of Natty.
I still has some problems regarding to the power manager on my machine:
On my first boot it was plugged with the power cable. Here everything was
smooth and I could hibernate/sleep (I don't know which is the default
setting).
When I unplugged the cable it said 3 hours of battery time, froze and I had
to kill it.
On my second boot it booted on battery power and it also booted fine. When I
> close the lid it hibernated/slept and woke up, worked for about a minute and
> froze so I had to kill it.
On my third boot I plugged the cable and it booted fine. But when I
unplugged the cable it warned me about three minutes of battery time left
(although it was almost full (3 hours)). I tried to open a folder. It didn't
open but asked me if I would cancel the opening. After about two minutes
where I couldn't do anything it froze again.
So still pretty annoying.
Generally I like the system, but I am not satisfied that it takes pretty
long time to find the settings programs that you normally find under system
in the desktop editions. This was also why I quit the netbook editions
earlier. Furthermore I think the dock is smooth when working with the
applications, but not so convenient if the program you need to use is not on
the screen when you start and you have to find it.
Best regards,
Kristian

Hello
Actually seems a duplicate of bug 656745 but with some variants.
Can you please, running Natty and detaching power cable if in your syslog there are entries for Power or Thermal limit exceeded.
similar to ([ 4518.607830] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded).
Are you running an Usb session created with startup disk creator and persistence?
If yes can you please reproduce the issue and attach here the files
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/kern.log running the live session?
When you start Natty (at the login screen) you can choose if start unity (desktop), classical (gnome+compiz), or classical without effect (metacity).
Unity is easy, just right click on Apps lens and system is showed, see attached screenshot

Hello,
actually now I can detach the power cable without it freezing. The first
time it worked perfectly, but in the session I'm in now as I write you it
warned me about low battery.
I reproduced the issue in regards to hibernation/sleep, and it froze.

I'm having exactly same symptoms with my Wind U100. I had it with ubuntu 10.10 and now I did a fresh install for 11.04 and still the problem remains. Is there some logs i could provide to help solving the problem?
This is pretty annoying bug since it's making it hard to use computer during work days. I need information from computer/internet constantly for short periods and it's annoyingly slow to shut down and start up over and over again.

Kristian Lybæk, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https:/
apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>
Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-
If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-
If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-
Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
