Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Upgrading to 1:0.9.2.1+glibmainloop3-0ubuntu4, I can no longer login to the 'Ubuntu Desktop' without compiz crashing. When I login, I see the unity launcher briefly, then it goes away and I am left with only a background and a spinning cursor. ubuntu3 did not have this problem, but I did suffer from the 'menus behind applications' bug #690461 after a couple of hours of use which ubuntu4 was supposed to fix.

As a workaround, I can login to the 'Ubuntu Classic Desktop', start ccsm via Alt+F2, then enable the unity plugin. Subsequent logins via the Classic Desktop work fine (and start unity).

Attached is a crash report retraced with apport-retrace with the coredump stripped out. The original crash report was not formatted properly (it lacked the 'Package: compiz' field). If required, I can provide the original crash report.

This bug was fixed in the package compiz - 1:0.9.4-0ubuntu1

---------------
compiz (1:0.9.4-0ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
    - Fix no windows receiving the focus if someone got the focus then was
      destroyed
    - Fix crash when resizing using keybindings
    - Fix unresponsive inactive decorations (LP: #703755)
    - Fix the long awaited gconf crash (LP: #691561)
    - gtk-window-decorator doesn't respect special decoration styles
      (LP: #290835)
  * debian/compiz-core.links,
    debian/source_compiz.py,
    debian/compiz-core.install:
    - install again a richer apport hook to redirect nux/libunity/unityshell
      crash. It also asks the user to redirect unity issues against unity (still
      incuding xorg info when needed)
  * Removed a bunch of patches either cherry-picked or pushed upstream. With the
    other fixes, the gconf workaround is hopefully not needed anymore.
  * refresh existing patches to still apply
  * debian/control:
    - rename dep on compiz-fusion* to compiz*
  * debian/patches/085_add_grid_plugin.patch:
    - refresh the grid plugin from new release
  * debian/patches/086_new_grid_defaults.patch
    - separate tweaking the default settings to only have the effect that were
      specified:
      top -> maximize, left (top or bottom left) -> window half left of the
      screen, right (top or bottom right) -> window half right of the screen,
      bottom -> do nothing

can someone backport the compiz to maverick or i should use the ubuntu-desktop PPA ?

Travis Watkins (amaranth) wrote :

This particular bug should not have been happening in maverick as it was caused by timing issues with moving compiz to the glib mainloop. However, compiz in natty cannot be backported to maverick anyway because it is setup to be used with unity and for various other reasons that cannot be backported.
