Bug Description

Binary package hint: asterisk

Asterisk 1.8 is the newest and best-supported version of asterisk. Asterisk 1.6 will be phased out over the next year and will not receive anything but security updates past April 2011. This newest version is a LTS release and will be fully supported all throughout the next four years. Rather than continue with a version that is due to be phased out relatively soon, we should probably move up to what will likely become the standard.

Also, the asterisk package needs a major facelift. I have been working on a new package for Natty and will soon have one for Maverick in my PPA.

License: GPL-2+, some portions BSD (both 3-clause and 4-clause)

Tzafrir has already prepared 1.8.0 packages in the Debian repository,
I would start there.

Really? I already looked there and didn't find anything for it. I've been bungling my way through reinventing the wheel this entire time!

They're in SVN, not uploaded to any archives yet:

svn://svn.debian.org/pkg-voip/asterisk/trunk/

Well, that certainly explains why I didn't find something. It's been about a month since the last commit, though, so it's possible it won't be ready for Natty at this rate. Or at least, not comfortably so.

I have contacted him through Alioth and asked to compare notes, though I am already working with 1.8.1 (why not work with the latest version if that's what you can get?). This may end up going through Debian first.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

I have made contact with the PKG-VoIP maintenance team at Ubuntu and I am working with them on making changes to the package. I'll post on this bug again when we can sync the package from Debian - hopefully, in enough time to get it into Natty.

I'll do that, thanks. We are also working on longstanding licensing issues with software in the package as well, so it might be a while.

I should be more clear: this is in relation to the iLBC codec license which seems to have a questionable status. That's why the codec was dropped from the Debian build of the code. It would appear that the GIPS license on the ilbcfreeware.org site is in conflict with the IETF policies regarding free use of code extracted from an RFC document. The conflict in question arises from the possible use of Asterisk in a commercial implementation, which would require registration of its use with GIPS, and that violates RFC3978, which seems to grant the license automatically. The GIPS license would make the package non-free but the IETF-derived license would preserve that, so the true nature of the license involved needs to be determined.

I don't think the question has been settled and the issue has been avoided for quite some time. The registration requirement seems to be for companies who incorporate iLBC into their technology, not for ones that simply use the software that has the incorporated codec. My idea is to contact GIPS to get a determination in the matter and see if there is anything that can be done to simplify the situation. If so, we might be able to include the codec in the package for those who might use it.

Of course, for now iLBC has been disabled in the build entirely and not even added to the source tree, so there isn't a problem at the moment. I just want this question resolved definitively once and for all.

The Asterisk 1.8.1.1 packaging currently in the pkg-voip experimental branch is compatible with Ubuntu Lucid and Ubuntu Maverick, so you don't need to redo it. (Early commits did however have incompatibilities.)

I've been getting a small number of support inquiries for this PPA

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~dajhorn/+archive/pkg-voip

so there is demand for Asterisk 1.8 on Ubuntu and the Debian packaging by Tzafrir Cohen seems good.

I am working with Tzafrir on that packaging now. When we're ready, I'll be
asking for a Debian sync to get the new package into (at least) Natty, and I
will have a copy of it for Maverick in my PPA to test.
