Bug Description

In Windows XP Professional SP3 In started Wubi.exe rev 197.
It installed the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64.iso file I had in the same folder.

After installation it asked for reboot and I opted for Yes/Reboot.

On boot, there was no boot menu shown.
Instead WinXP was booted (it ended in a black screen / lockup.... on next reboot Windows booted normally)

C:\boot.ini is :

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
[spybotsd]
timeout.old=3

Wubi log is attached.

I think this explains a bit:

12-14 17:25 DEBUG WindowsBackend: modify_bootini F:
12-14 17:25 DEBUG WindowsBackend: Could not find boot.ini F:\boot.ini

For some reason it tried to locate boot.ini on the wrong drive.

Actually this are two bugs:
 - one, that boot,ini was tried to be accessed on the wrong drive
 - two, the installer did not stop and inform the user, when a vital step failed

It tried to modify the boot.ini on C: (didn't report an error), then tried on F:. I don't think it's unusual to look for all the boot.ini's it can find. Right or wrong, I've noticed it modifies the one on my rescue partition as well.
Regarding the missing entry in c:\boot.ini, maybe it's tripping over that [spybotsd] stuff. I've never seen that before. Just add the required entry yourself as a workaround while you're waiting for someone to fix the bug.
