Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-mouse

The touchpad works but is too sensitive, so I want to disable the "tap to click" feature. However, it doesn't seem to be detected by the system, because under Systems->Preferences there is nothing for the touchpad, nor is there a tab or options for it under System->Preferences->Mouse.

I tried adding these lines to xorg.conf, based on what I found online, to disable the "tap to click." But it had no effect:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
        Driver "synaptics"
        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
        Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
        Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
        Option "MaxTapTime" "0"
EndSection

The machine is Dell Latitude E6510.

Ubuntu version is buntu 10.04.1 LTS

The kernel is failing to recognise the touchpad and is falling back to identifying it as a PS2 mouse. This is due to the touchpad/stick using a new protocol. The manufacturer is not releasing the specs so that a free driver can be written.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/550625

The protocol has been mostly reverse engineered and there is now a fix involving a patched kernel module, but it isn't completely perfect (won't do multitouch) and hasn't yet found its way into the mainstream kernels.
