Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I can reliably reproduce this problem with natty alpha 1 (compiz 0.9.2.1) with the following steps:

1) Enable the expo and wobbly plugins in ccsm and make sure maximize_effect is on (it's on by default).
2) Focus a maximized window
3) Bring up expo with either the keyboard shortcut or the unity workspaces button
4) Double-click the maximized window (this dismisses expo)
5) Bring up expo again and move the mouse without clicking

The maximized window "wobbles" as the mouse is moved around (as though it were being dragged, except that it never actually moves). Dismissing expo doesn't un-deform the window, which stays warped until compiz is restarted.

I think there is some other factor in reproducing this bug, because I do not get it 100% of the time by doing the above, and I get it in other ways too. But the bug is definitely there as of the 28th of March.

Attached is a screenshot of the start of the problem. See that the mouse pointer in over desktop 1, but the maximized Thunderbird window on desktop 9 is deformed, and the deformation follows the mouse, although all I've done is trigger the expo mode (no clicking anywhere).

The problem is then usually followed by:
- If I click on the window, it recovers its rectangular shape, but instead of covering the desktop it is offset in the x and y directions (occupying portions of other workspaces) and/or partly hidden under the unity overlay.
- If I exit expo and unmaximize the window, the window springs to a deformed shape, then when it stops wobblying it is suddenly replaced by a rectangular window
- If I try to move it, the window behaves as if it had a pin somewhere forcing it to both deform and stay in place. Releasing the mouse button makes the window spring back to its original position, making it impossible to move.
- If I maximize it again, the wobbly animation again ends at a deformed shape, then the rectangular window appears
- Unmaximizing and focusing another window seems clears the problem

I've had instances of this bug where the window in question continues to be deformed according to the mouse position even after leaving expo, and other instances where the window remains statically deformed after exiting expo..

I wouldn't know, but it looks like a mouse click-and-hold event or a multitouch tap event is being registered on the window despite not being issued, and only being cleared after exiting expo, unmaximizing and focusing another window.. It might be that the problem is not in the wobbly effect itself, but is only apparent with this plug-in enabled, and displays very occasionally as random window moves without it.

Another screenshot attached: a permanently deformed window, as described above but displays like this even after leaving expo. Interestingly, I opened gcalc-tool to display atop liferea, but for some reason gnome-screenshot removed gcalc-tool from the shot..

And yet another, just after the previous: liferea is being deformed by the mouse pointer in expo mode, but notice how "something" is pulling from it from the bottom end (the top of the feed list is skewed upwards, the bottom downwards).

I still can't find a reliable way to trigger any of these problems, except playing around with expo mode for a while, or entirely by accident, but it tends to happen handful of times a day..

Wobbly is unsupported so its just not a priority right now.

Ok, thanks.

I've tried disabling wobbly windows to see if I can see any weird behaviour in expo, since I have the feeling that this problem may be outside the wobbly plugin. One thing I still see (which I had not reported above) is that by clicking-and-holding outside of the expo region and dragging the pointer inside, sometimes a window (not necessarily the one with focus, nor the closest one to the pointer) is dragged by the pointer moves.

I'm saying this here because this is similar to what I see in the issues with wobbly, i.e., some window incorrectly believing it's attached to the pointer, but let me know if you'd like me to report a new bug.

Sam, I believe the cause of this bug is bug 727060 "Damage events not
received when chromium opened automaximized" which is marked fixed but is
not fixed as I face it sometimes.

Do you still face it with the latest updates to nux? Apparaently it
was leaked state and was fixed there.

Or more importantly I'd like to know if you get this problem with the
classic session.

This bug and the chromium one are not related btw. It's a bug in the
output picking of wobbly itself

I've had wobbly enabled for a couple of weeks in Precise and I haven't seen this bug at all, so I would conclude it's been fixed, whatever the problem was.
