Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

- This Toshiba Satellite works fine with Ubuntu 9.10. But with 10.04, I occasionally get a frozen screen. The computer still works, it reacts to keys and all, but the screen is blank. Pressing the power button shuts down the computer cleanly, and after restart it's ok again. There are no currently known scenarios in which this always happens; it's not reproducible / sporadic (and nasty). I have to go back to 9.10 for now.
- Deactivating desktop visual effects did not resolve the problem
- The graphic device is Mobility Radeon X1400
- With Ubuntu 10.10. I experience the same problem

See Question #119317. It is not really a question any more, but a bug. Applies to latest Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10.

You still need to supply log files and debugging data. For your convenience there is a tool to collect most of the common logs, which you can gather by running:

  apport-collect 680291

Since the development cycles for lucid and maverick are completed now, if possible, please reproduce the issue under natty, and provide log files from natty after rebooting.

Fwiw, the blank screen may be a kernel drm gpu issue of some sort. Impossible to guess without having log files though.

Many thanks for improving Ubuntu by working on this issue.

Please note that I cannot install any other Ubuntu version than 10.04
on my computer at this time. While I understand that new features
won't be added to 10.04, I understand that bugfixes are still being
made, after all it's supposed to be LTS.

I would run said utility under the present installation and upload the
result, if I can do that without expert knowledge (which I do not
have, I am just a user).

I thank you for your understanding and patience, and hope to receive
some feedback soon.

with kind regards,
Georg Profos

Thank you for your interest in resolving this issue.

I ran apport-collect 680291 on the command line and the information
should be uploaded now. You may use this data for the purpose of
fixing this bug.

Note that this issue is not reproducible, it occurs spontaneously once
every now and then.

I would expect the bug status change to an active state based on this.
Please kindly advise.

Georg Profos

Vectorio, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
