Oopses are kernel bugs.

Thanks for your report. This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers). However, the fact that it crashed is a kernel bug.

I believe this is a duplicate of bug #65106, for which a workaround have been made at Edgy Eft, just before releasing 6.10.

It make sense you get it because you have a Dual Core:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ stepping 02

Beware, there exist a bug reporting freeze on Dual Core on 6.10.
See bug #68612

Ok. I did check the CD, and it failed zero checksums. Also, the DVD drive is rather new, and I have never had problems with it. I was using a couple of programs (Firefox and Gaim) at the same time as the installation; when I tried again (after restarting) without using anything (the two programs were still running since I had been using them), it finished without errors.

The way I understood the problem, it happens when both 'half' of the CPU try to read an installation CD (with Squash filesystem) simultaneously. There is a question of luck here.

If you don't upgrade to edgy, it would be possible for it to happen again when you install packages from the CD.

I don't fully understand the bug, previous comment is just my own understanding.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Sorry for not following up on this. In fact, I have not been able to reproduce this since 7.04 (maybe even the final for 6.10...). This can probably be set as resolved. Sorry again...
