Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

I am able to browse the software center and see further information on the applications but when I press the install button nothing more than a button press happens.

I have been having issues with the gui not loading unless I first login to the safe mode and then switch user back to standard desktop edition. Maybe these are connected?

I am using a downloaded from ubuntu site 10.10 maverick.

Thanks
Wayne

ps - Apart from these small issues... Thanks Ubuntu for helping me become Windows free!

Thank you for opening this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I would firstly like to ask whether you are unable to install only certain applications or whether you are unable to install all applications from the software center. Also, could you please describe your gui problems in greater detail, it will be helpful to attach screenshots of any problems you are experiencing.

Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

It is with any of the applications I try to download. I have attached a
screenshot of 1 in particular but it is not common to this application
alone.

The gui bug is as follows:

When starting my laptop and once arriving at the user login screen, if I
login to the default, Ubuntu Standard Desktop Edition, the welcome tone
will play and the default Ubuntu wallpaper will appear, as does the
mouse cursor. Unfortunatly, this is all that ever appears.

If however I instead login to, Ubuntu Standard Desktop (safe mode), I
then have access to the OS, computer, files, applications etc. I then
"switch user" back to myself again but not in safe mode and it seems to
be operating fine from then on.

Thanks
Wayne

Sorry for the delayed response.

To help further investigate this bug it would be helpful if you could attach further files to the bug. To do this, please use the "Add attachment or patch" button at the bottom of the page.

The first file to attach is syslog - which is located in the /var/log/installer directory. To get a copy of this file you need to type the command "sudo chown <your username>: ~/installer.syslog" (with your actual username inserted) into the terminal. This will then copy the file into the Home Folder, where you can post it here.

The second file to attach is the ~/.xsession-errors file. This is located within your Home Folder. However, the file is hidden, therefore to view it you can press Ctrl + H. Then, locate the ~/.xsession-errors file within the Home Folder and post here.

The third file to attach is the Xorg.0.log file. This is located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. This can be located by accessing Computer (within Places) and then accessing the var and log folders to find the Xorg.0.log.file.

Finally, you need to run this command from the terminal "sudo software-center > /tmp/sc.log 2>&1". This will load the Software Center. Then try and install a piece of software, after you have received the error you should then close the Software Center. This would have generated a file located at /tmp/sc.log (again accessible from Computer). Locate this file and again post it to your response.

Thanks.
