The problem went away -- seemingly in response to me removing compiz-fusion-plugins-extra, which was blocking the update of compiz.

Nope, it's is not fixed.
I'm trying to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 right now, and the same error came up, and, yes, i did try to remove compiz-fusion-plugins-extra. so this is definitely not the reason.
any help would be much appreciated.
