Bug Description

When trying to print from inkscape, I get a message that inkcape has encountered an internal error and then it closes down. I've tried to print with several images I've made, and I always get the same error.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and printing with hp deskjet 940c. So far I haven't had any issues at all with this printer. The only solution so far is to export as pdf, and print from Evince, or another pdf viewer. That convinces me that this is not a printer driver issue.

If you mean libcairo2, it is 1.9.6-6~mrw4

You are using an outdated snapshot version of cairo which causes inkscape to crash when printing or opening the print preview. It was fixed in cairo snapshot 1.9.12, and the fix is also in the current stable version 1.10. The previous stable version 1.8.10 didn't have this bug either - i.e. you can either downgrade to cairo 1.8.10 or upgrade to cairo 1.10.

Linking as duplicate to
Bug #600622 in cairo (Ubuntu): “inkscape assert failure: inkscape: /build/buildd/cairo-1.9.10/src/cairo-surface.c:337: _cairo_surface_begin_modification: Assertion `! surface->finished' failed.”:

Thanks for the info, now finding a 'how to'. Hopefully upgrading or
downgrading won't break any other apps.
