Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunderbird

I'm using TDB 3.0.10 with ubuntu 10.04-LTS.

For some time, I can't delete any message or move it to another place without restart Thunderbird.

When TDB is restarted, it works well some time (less than one half a day) then this issue comes back.

All garbages are empty and directories compacted. Junk mails has been removed and their directories emptied-compacted.
Auto compact is set to 50k.
I tried :
  - copy Mail directory then work on the copy after restart TDB
  - remove all Mail/*.msf in one of my email box. They've been well recreated at restart.

jsconsole shows 2 errors but they seems not to be linked with that issue :

  - the first one is referenced by bug #672559 :

Error: [Exception... "update.locale file doesn't exist in either the XCurProcD or GreD directories" nsresult: "0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)" location: "JS frame :: file:///usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.10/components/nsUpdateService.js :: getLocale :: line 608" data: no]
Source File: file:///usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.10/components/nsUpdateService.js
Line: 608

  - the other one is about the login manager :

Erreur : [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED) [nsIRequest.name]" nsresult: "0x80004001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_IMPLEMENTED)" location: "JS frame :: file:///usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.10/components/nsLoginManager.js :: anonymous :: line 328" data: no]

One thing more that may help :
I use some filters to sort any emails and move them in some other directories
When the issue is on then the messages are not filtered anymore and go down within the inbox directory.
If I try to force the filter, it doesn't work and the message keep on inbox then, in this case too, I have to restart TDB to get it working.
All my filters are setted with "check the message after sort or execute by hand" (this is a translation from french, it might be a bit different in correct english)

Problems associated with deleting or moving email usually stem from failure to compact mail

folders, especially inboxes. This is because deleted email is not removed from the

application until you compact (expunge is the technical term). This can be done

automatically by a setting in your email account. Manually is simple enough. On any mail

folder do this: right click/compact (or File/Compact Folders). This is especially important

on inboxes but also, any folder from which you regularly delete/move email.

If you are experiencing problems you probably have a lot of uncompacted mail so be patient

the first time and watch the activity bar for its status (at the bottom of the application).

two things just for starters:

Archive all the mail currently in the Inbox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Archiving_your_e-mail

    enable AutoCompact
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_fo ... omatically

Thanks for your reply Mario, but if you read attentively my bug description, all inboxes and folders were compacted (even junk mail folders and bin) and the trouble was still present.
I finally fixed it creating a new profile and copy in all my personnal parameters files (sqlite, dbs, json files ...)
BTW, I must say that there is a long time this issue didn't reappear. Now I'm running ubuntu 12.04LTS and TDB 24.2.0
