System hangs while going to standby

Bug Description

When going to standby (closing the lid of my laptop) sometimes the fan goes up and temperature rises but nothing else happens, the system hangs. The only thing I can do is a reset.

The problem seems to have been introduced by the latest kernel update (to 2.6.35-22) in Maverick. I'll try to collect some more stanzas from syslog before going back one kernel version. So far, I have only found that when the problem occurs, the wlan seems to have been brought down properly, but then the message "PM: Syncing filesystems ... done." does not appear in syslog.

So far, I have found a similar problem description in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1599218. The problem has been described for a Toshiba laptop while I find it on a HP nc6000 and an 6730b. So it does not seem to be related to a particular brand.

The problem is NOT that the fan goes up. The fan usually goes up once for a short time when you put a laptop in stand by. The problem is that the laptop does not go to stand by, it keeps running (leds are on). I have, however, no idea what it does because the screen is dark and the laptop is no longer reachable via the network.

I assume that some final step in the process of going to stand by is not executed.

Trying to find a solution, I tested uswsusp. This has totally screwed up my file system when trying to hibernate my computer. So I had to reinstall.

After the fresh install of Maverick, going to standby works. I assume that some configuration file didn't get properly updated somewhere between 9.04 and 10.10.
