Confirming based on the duplicate bug and further reports here:

What version of the xinit package did you have installed when this happened? Attach /var/log/dpkg.log

x11-common declares a Replaces on xinit <= 1.0.1-0ubuntu3 (the version in Dapper), but this is broken by the recent Dapper security update which is 1.0.1-0ubuntu3.1 (but still contains the overlapping file)

Should probably just be "Replaces: xinit (<< 1.0.2)", since 1.0.2 was where the move happened in edgy, and that gives us a bit more breathing room for versioning.

Hi,
Well, in my laptop I made a mistake and removed all X files, so I couldn't access the graphical view.
In my PC I solved the conflict by removing xinit and installing the new one from edgy repository.
But after that I found 3 more conflicts of versions, not about x11 of course, but didn't let me continue with the installation. One of them was Anjuta <-> Anjuta-common and I can't remember now the other two.

In the laptot I decided finally to get an edgy RC CD from the website and formatting the '/' mount point. It works fine. Thank goodnes I burned a DVD with all my data before doing the first update between dapper and edgy.

Hello,
My problem was with the anjuta, and I did it:

# dpkg -i --force-all /var/cache/apt/archives/anjuta_2.0.2-2ubuntu1_i386.deb

And next

# apt-get -f install

Finily

# apt-get dist-upgrade;

That is unrelated to this bug and should be filed under anjuta.
