What version of the xinit package did you have installed when this happened? Attach /var/log/dpkg.log |
x11-common declares a Replaces on xinit <= 1.0.1-0ubuntu3 (the version in Dapper), but this is broken by the recent Dapper security update which is 1.0.1-0ubuntu3.1 (but still contains the overlapping file)
