Bug Description

Since upgrading to 10.04 LTS I have lost the elegant boot up and shut down screens and now have a load of text, with various warnings that flashes by. The result is ok, but the process is quite ugly. Particularly when there is a forced bisk check!

I am running on AMD64 and am an IT professional so can execute commands and provide any support to solve this.

I am a STRONG Ubuntu supporter from the first days of Ubuntu - And will always be!

Keep up this good work!

Non-supported driver resulting in ugly 16-color low res boot (plymouth with text only, instead of graphics) is a known KMS issue. However radeon should be supported.

Could you please try the following to see if it makes the boot more aesthetically pleasing:
echo options radeon modeset=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf

Hi!
thanks for your reply.

I created that .conf file and put the content you requested into it.

The text is now a bit smaller, but still unacceptably ugly for a boot
sequence, particularly since I use this machine to show off Ubuntu Linux to
my non IT friends!

I demo to all how easy it is and not geeky etc.

This new text problem is so ugly and off-putting that I can no longer show
just anyone how good Linux is...

It's really a shame that this version of Ubuntu has such an ugly reversion
to old times when only PhD's could run Linux (I'm one ;-).

I hope you can fix it. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

Ciao,
bob.

gratefulfrog, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi
I tired to run apport-collect, but it opened launchpad int he name of my
computer, not in my account so it failed to report to the bug.

I use this computer in production so there is no way for me to try an
upstream realease. I am now running 12.04 and the text is still present
during boot and shutdown.

Generally speaking my Ubuntu OS runs less well with each upgrade, alas.

I still support you guys 100%!

Keep trying!
Ciao,
B
