Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

User received email with embedded images as forwarded message, evolution 2.30.3 rendered images correctly but didn't allow user to save images. When selecting image, user were only prompted with context menu option of coping image or saving whole email but not the image alone. Coping option didn't allow user to paste image in to Desktop folder.

Expected results:
When same email was forwarded to Mac OSX Mail client, an attachments were detected correctly and allowed user to easily extract images in form of attachment. Same process should be applied to Evolution mail client.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

It is still an issue with Evolution 2.32.2 and Natty (both on 32 and 64 bit machines, and has been an issue for a way long time.

The only way I have found to save them is to copy the source and then decode them with another app: way too much trouble.

This is an Evolution problem, not an Ubuntu one: it applies across a lot of different Linux distros.

But if you really DO have to save a picture (reasonably) quickly:

- View the message source, select all, paste into a text editor, save the file.
- Install xdeview from the repos: I suggest you use Synaptic, because it didn't install when I used the Software Centre.
- Open the text file with xdeview, it will display a list of images it finds in the source, list the ones you want decoded and press execute.

This bug still affects Evolution 2.32.2.

Quite frankly I struggle to believe that you can't save embedded base64 images from a mail to a file. This is basic functionality for a mail client in 2011. Noone, especially "mum & dad" users, should be expected to have to do their own view source & base64 decode themselves.

Seriously guys.

Yup, I quite agree. The fact that this continues to be on the "too hard" list may be one of the reasons that Thunderbird is apparently the default email client Ubuntu 11.10.
The nuisance part of that is that all my calendar, contacts, and so on and so forth would need migrating if I opted to go the Thunderbird way. Let alone what happens to syncing contacts via Ubuntu One.
Given my 'druthers, I'druther stay with Evolution, so I guess I'll still be saving pictures the hard way, or by forwarding them to my webmail. Either way is not really 21st Century.

Whoopee! Finally fixed in Evolution 3.2 in Ubuntu 11.10.

And reference my my wondering above in #6: "The nuisance part of that is that all my calendar, contacts, and so on and so forth would need migrating if I opted to go the Thunderbird way. Let alone what happens to syncing contacts via Ubuntu One," - the Ubuntu One plugin in Thuderbird pulls in the address book almost instantaneously when it is installed.
