Run the following command in terminal.
---------------
firefox -no-remote -P
---------------
It will bring up a dialog to create a new profile in firefox. Create one and name it "Test". Then select the Test profile to start firefox with. See if the problem persists under the test profile.
Dan Koga (dkoga2424) wrote : | #5 |
I tried that and still get the same error.
I have also noticed some strange behaviors with Firefox not connecting to
some sites, for example www.debian.org. I get the Unable to Connect error
page but I can load the site using Chrome. Also, a couple of times it could
not find my home page on yahoo (http://
recent history and then it found my home page. This is a separate problem
and if it persists I will submit another bug report.

Try this:
(Close all firefox instances before proceeding!)
NOTE: Your firefox settings will be removed temporarily but we will put them back when finished.
1) mkdir ~/Mozilla-Conf
2) mv ~/.mozilla ~/Mozilla-Conf
3) Start firefox and see if you can download the addon

Interesting, I wonder if you can download that file at all. Run:
wget https:/
If it download successfully then the file will be located in the root of your home-folder. Make sure it is.
(If you want to restore firefox settings that were removed please run the following)
Make sure firefox is closed!
1) rm -r ~/.mozilla
2) mv ~/Mozilla-
DONE

Well this seems to be a network problem rather than a firefox one. Those were two different downloads.
Try this last one. Its an icon from gnome-look. Totally different site. See if it works.
wget http://

That one worked, downloaded the icon file.

Looks like your using an outdated version of firefox for 10.10. Close firefox and other applications, perform a system upgrade.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Reboot the machine (to be safe) and then try firefox again.

Yes, I am still having trouble connecting to debian.org. The error is a
timeout error though. It could be that debian.org is busy but I can usually
switch to Chrome and pull the site up.

Lets try downloading from a fresh account. We will remove it when done.
In a terminal:
useradd test
passwd 123456
Then:
su test
ENTER PASSWORD WHEN PROMPTED
then under the new user run
wget https:/
To see if it downloaded properly run:
ls /home/test
And see if the downloaded file is listed there.
RedSingularity (redsingularity) wrote : | #30 |
Actually disregard the above commands. I need to revise them.
RedSingularity (redsingularity) wrote : | #31 |
Run this instead:
1) sudo useradd -d /home/testuser -m testuser
2) sudo passwd testuser (make password anything)
3) su testuser
4) cd
5) wget https:/
To see if the package downloaded run:
ls /home/testuser
and see if the file is listed.

This is very odd indeed. And you couldn't download on a live cd either correct?
If it doesn't have a negative effect on other computers in your area, could you perform a "hard reset" on your wireless router then try again? The hard reset will set it back to factory defaults.

I am temporarily staying with friends and the router does not belong to me.
Don't know how they would feel about a hard reset on the router.

Ok no problem. If you booted the live cd and there was still a problem obviously something is wrong with the router or the OS itself. I doubt the router anyway since you can use windows on it with no problem. As for the OS though there may be a defect in the disk itself. Can you get your hands on another version of ubuntu or try burning another 10.10 on a blank CD if you have one. If you download 10.10 again download it from the official Ubuntu site. (You may have done that from the start but try burning a fresh one anyway.)

NOTE: If you can download a fresh one try the wget commands from booting the CD again. No need to install the whole system all over.

I see. No problem. Unfortunately we cannot confirm a networking problem until you try it on another network. Though, this seems to point VERY strongly towards a networking issue. If you get the chance to try anytime soon I would greatly appreciate a report back here verifying if the problem was resolved and thus confirm the network issue.
Dan Koga (dkoga2424) wrote : | #51 |
Don't know if you are still interested but I solved the problem. About a
week ago I was having problems with my browsers serving the wrong page, I
would select a bookmark to go to Yahoo and instead the browser would display
the Google home page. Another time it showed a page from Scientific American
when trying to reach a totally different site. This happened in both Firefox
and Chromium so I know it was not a browser problem. And both browsers would
get directed to the wrong site (btw, if I remember correctly, the address
bar would show the address of the site I was trying to reach but the page
content was from a different site).
Anyway, I recalled reading some time ago about Google's DNS so I changed my
network setup to use Google's DNS and when I tried installing the addon
tonight it worked! Also, I was able to use wget to download the addon file.
As a check, I switched back to the Qwest DNS and wget failed.
Apparently there is some sort of problem with Qwest's DNS.
Thanks,
Dan
