Bug Description

Think there is a Linux kernel bug.

I have an Asus P5Q Premium with SIL5723 and I guess Marvell drivers (61xx / 88se6121). Everything was working nice when running 10.04. After installing 10.10, Ubuntu would not recognize disks on the SIL5723. I have part of a Raid 6 on these connectors. ICH10 disks no problems.

Disks are recognized by BIOS and I see disks (DriveXpert when starting the PC. When booting it takes a lot of time and then I get message about raid not mountable.

Started 10.10 with kernel 2.6.32 and raid mounted and working perfect. Guess 2.6.32 is long term stable release. However with this kernel I'm not able to run Gparted and there might be other problems as well. Guess 2.6.32 was available for booting as I upgraded and did not do a fresh install.

Looks this is a Linux kernel (2.6.35) problem. I'm not able to find Marvell drivers to install. Not keen on going back to 10.04 either.

When running “lspci” I find the 88SE6121 both for 2.6.32-25.44 and 2.6.35-22.35.

I have attached “dmesg” for both runs (in the same file). Disks on DriveXpert are recognised when running 2.6.32 but there are no reference to that controller when running 2.6.35.

Best regards
Per Arne

I have same board. I do not use fakeroot, but I do use software raid.
Have 5 drives attached to intel controller, and 2 to marvell. On kernel 2.6.35-22 there is no track of marvell-attached drives, which makes the machine stop booting (raid is on all disks, and is mounted on /home and /usr

When I am booting from jaunty kernel (2.6.28-19-server) it all works well.

I did gather some evidence:

Hi Per,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 666144

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Yes it was an issue a few days back. The PC is in Qatar and I have only had
2 days in Qatar this month. I'm in Europe and will only be able to test
early January when I'm back

Best regards

Hi,
I'm back in Qatar and Ubuntu is running. Think bug was resolved in 2.6.35.23.

When today starting up with different kernels:
2.6.35.24: Works fine
2.6.35.23: Works fine
2.6.35.22: Still does not work

Conclusion: Problem is solved.

Best regards and thanks for involvement

Have 2x 750 GB SATA's loaded on the orange Sil5723 ports (P5Q-E MoBo, BIOS v.1703), but I see no sign of the controller or devices.

Have I missed something?

I did not have the problem when running 10.04/Lucid. You could try SystemRescueCD and see whether disks are recognised then.

I have connected 4 disks to 5723. "Orange" ports (port 0 orange/port1 white) I have in BIOS (Drive Xpert) defined as "Speed" I think. In your case the disks would show as ONE 1500 GB disk. Another option is show only one 750 GB disk. In that case you save on one ang get automatic backup on the other one. Guess you are aware the BIOS setup, however just in case.

When I boot some Marvell messages flash indicating disks are recognised.
